Medusa Piercing

Medusa piercing, also known as a philtrum piercing, is a lip piercing done in the middle of the upper lip. It is actually performed on the indented area of the upper lip known as philtrum (hence the name). This is one of the most popular lip piercing types and it can look very stylish and attractive. A Medusa piercing is positioned directly under the septum of the nose and above the lowest part of the upper lip’s center so the jewelry sits in the dip (philtrum) of the upper lip. Typical jewelry for a Medusa piercing is a labret stud though there are some people who prefer to use Captive Bead Rings or other types of body piercing rings.

A Medusa piercing has some popular variants. Regular Medusa piercing, as described above, is a simple piercing done on the philtrum, where one side of the jewelry sits on the lip and the other side is inside of the mouth. However, there is also a vertical variant of this piercing, known as a Jestrum piercing. This one is done vertically on the philtrum and both ends of the jewelry are visible. Also, keep in mind that a Medusa piercing can be used alone or in a combination with other lip piercings to create the so-called “bites” piercings. The most popular type of a bites piercing that uses a Medusa piercing is a Cyber bites piercing. Cyber bites consists of a Medusa piercing and a labret piercing. Labret piercing is done centrally on the lower lip and Medusa is often considered its variation (only done on the upper lip). The combination of the two makes for a Cyber bites piercing.
