Im sitting here watching a quite large needle pierce one side of the flesh, the strain to get it through to the other side. Hearing the grunt of pain from some where outside of that. Watching the flesh finally give way and then followed by a hook. One down, six to go. This is something so small, but so powerful in a completely unique environment. If you couldn’t tell, I am speaking about suspension. More specifically, Flesh suspension.
There are many different forms of body modifications or body rituals that could be experienced by a person. One of the most extreme forms of these body rituals is the art of suspension. This type of body art ritual has been around for many years, was used to test or challenge the endurance of the body and mind of a person. Not everyone is cut out to try the experience of suspension, only an individual knows if they can handle the entire ritual.
What is Suspension?
Suspension is basically where a person is hung from large hooks throughout the body to keep them in the air. Generally there is a team of people helping with this ritual because there is so much work that goes into preparing for this “life changing” event.
Some people think of this ritual as “life changing” because it forces the body to work together in dealing with the physical pain and the mental aspects of this act. However, depending on the person, this event may also affect the person’s spiritual well being. There is no real preparation that can be done for the physical pain but as far as the mental part of this ritual, there are some things that can be done to mentally prepare for a suspension. A few of the main things in being mentally prepared for a suspension is to make sure you want to do this, is understanding the positive and negative outcomes that could happen, and being very calm, relaxed and in an all around great state of mind. Deep meditation is also a very good way in getting mentally prepared for the suspension ritual.
How Must You Prepare For Suspension?
When preparing for a suspension ritual it is crucial that professionals are on hand. Temporary piercings are usually done at the time that the suspension is going to be done. These piercings are done with a regular piercing needle then inserted into the holes are large flesh hooks, usually a deep sea fishing hook. Some professionals will use the hooks themselves to do the piercings. Depending on the type of suspension that is going to be attempted and the person’s body weight and size, will decide the placements and number of the hooks.
The most common type of suspension that is done is the suicide suspension; this is where hooks are placed into the back and the person is lifted vertically. O-Kee-Pa suspension is where hooks are placed into the chest and the person is hung vertically. Superman suspension is another popular type of suspensions; it is where the person will be horizontal with their face downward.
Other types or positions of suspensions are:
- coma (horizontal facing upward)
- lotus (lotus position)
- knee (hanging upside down)
- calf (vertical upside down)
- crucifix (much like suicide suspension but adding hooks to the arms)
- resurrection suspension (hanging from torso)
After the hooks are in place they are hooked to a suspension rig with either a chain or a rope. The suspensions rig allows the weight to be evenly dispersed to each hook when the person is being lifted into the air. For some first timers, there are extra chains or ropes that are put on the person, not with hooks, to help them get into the air and become comfortable with the suspension. Depending on the person and the experience of this person can determine the length (minutes to hours) in which one is suspended into the air.
When the suspension ritual is done, the person is carefully lowered back down from the air. The sooner that the hooks are removed the less likely they are to cause extreme pain. After the hooks have been removed the air that has gotten into the skin needs to be expelled. Some people do not want to do this though. The wounds are cleaned. A scab will start to appear where the hooks were in place. Clean the spots where the hooks were like you would any other wound are recommended. There are many different negative things that could happen during this ritual, such as the hooks being ripped out. If you are going to do this amazing form of body art rituals it is important that you do your homework and find the professionals that can guide you into the direction of a successful suspension.

A relatively limited Art related to the Body Piercing industry is on its way to becoming much more popular and possibly even “main stream” in the near future. It is “Suspension”. This is accomplished when several body piercings are made in the body using Fish Hooks. Yes! we really do use Stainless Steel Fish Hooks with the barb ground down.
Do not go and pick up just any fish hook as they need to be the correct gauge to hold the weight of a human body, and they need to be Stainless Steel. We are considering adding them to our line in the near future if there is enough requests for them. There are only 2 particular hooks that are being used, and I think those fishing tackle companies probably just think that there has been a real population boom in the large Salmon 🙂 .
When all the piercings are complete and hooks inserted into the proper locations, then you are attached to ropes or cables that go to several different pulley’s which are used to lift you and “Suspend” you by these hooks. Sounds daring huh? Then later you can insert regular body jewelry to the piercings if you like, you do not keep the hooks in.
In a San Jose tattoo parlor, Mr Falkner who is considered the “Father of Modern Suspension,” had a class teaching just this. He took 15 different people from all lifestyles which varied from a lawyer from San Diego, an IT guy from Silicon Valley, two journalists from Mexico City, a state employee from Nebraska and a truck driver from Pennsylvania. In these classes they learned how to pierce skin, rig pulleys and clean wounds. On the final day after class they got the chance to practice their new skills on each other.
