Tips for New Piercings: What to Do If…

how-to-clean-your-nose-piercingFirst hours and days after getting your piercing done are crucial. This is when you should take special care of your new piercing so it can heal properly. Many people are unsure what to expect during this time, because even the normal, healthy piercings will show some warning signs during this period.

Here are some handy tips on what to do during this time.

Keep in mind that the healing time is long so you’re definitely not off the hook after the first few days. However, these first days are crucial for ensuring success with your piercings.

What To Do if…

… You don’t know how to clean properly

Many newbies do not know how to clean their piercings properly or how to perform adequate aftercare. This can be very detrimental to the health, so it’s important that you know how to care for your new piercing at all times. This is the job for your piercer, so if there is something you don’t understand, do not hesitate to ask them, even if it means going back to the studio to clarify.

The good news is that cleaning and aftercare are not complicated: the most complex thing about aftercare is that it has to be done consistently! Since many piercings take months to heal, many people may skip cleanings or do them sloppily. This is where things get nasty. However, as long as you stick to the recommended aftercare you don’t have to have any special technique for cleaning. In other words, it’s not difficult to clean properly.

There are only a few things you need to keep in mind when it comes to cleaning:

  • Clean as many times per day as recommended (no more, no less)
  • Use only gentle cleaners (saline solution works wonders)
  • Try to disturb your new piercing as little as possible while cleaning. No turning or twisting the jewelry!
  • If you touch your new piercing or jewelry, make sure your hands are absolutely clean

…You notice fluid coming out of your piercing

Some secretion is not uncommon for new piercings. You may notice some fluid coming out of the piercing in the first days after the procedure. This fluid should be liquid, almost clear (or just a bit yellow). It will typically form a crust around the hole and on the jewelry. This is a perfectly normal thing and it’s actually a sign that your piercing is healing properly. All you need to do is to clean your piercing as instructed. It should remove the crusts from the skin and jewelry. However, never scrub hard or try to remove the crusts with force. Just clean the piercing as you always do and leave it alone.

Fluid coming out of the piercing can be a sign of an infection, but it’s usually easy to tell when there’s a problem. You will notice swelling and increased tenderness if that happens. Also, the secretion will be darker in color (darker yellow, white, or another color). This is pus and it’s typically not as liquid as the normal secretion. If in doubt, it’s best to seek medical advice.

… Your New Piercing is Swollen

Tongue_piercingAfter you get pierced, you can expect some swelling. Most piercings will swell right after the procedure and in the following days. This swelling is normal and it’s just a body’s reaction to what happened.

Keep in mind, however, that this swelling should be temporary. It should not hurt much and it should go away on its own within a few days. You should definitely see it getting better every day. This is a good sign of healing.

If, on the other hand, the swelling becomes worse or if you experience pain and discomfort, it is a sign that something is wrong. Your new piercing may be infected. The best course of action in these situations is to consult your doctor, not your piercer. Keep in mind that piercers are not medical professionals. Most of the time, these infections and problems are not serious, but only if you get medical help straight away. Never wait for too long to seek help if you experience any prolonged swelling or other signs of infection.

… Your New Piercing Hurts

Your new piercing will definitely be sensitive in the first hours, if not days, after the procedure. This is normal and you should not worry about it. You may take painkillers to ease the pain, but other than that, it’s not a sign that something is wrong.

However, keep in mind that your piercing should get better quickly. The pain should be gone within a day or a few days. The exact time needed for a piercing to stop hurting will depend on numerous factors, first and foremost, the body part and the type of piercing you have. Make sure to ask your piercer about the normal time in which you can expect your new piercing to be painful. This way, you will know if everything is healing normally or if there is a reason to be concerned.

If the pain persists for longer than normal or if it gets worse, it’s important to seek medical help immediately, because it can be a sign of an infection or another problem. It’s vital to react quickly because piercing infections can progress quickly.

… Your jewelry cuts into the skin

The initial swelling after the procedure can make the jewelry become “tight” so it might cut into the skin. If the swelling is barely noticeable this should not cause any problems. However, it can become an issue if the swelling is more pronounced. It can also be a sign of an inexperienced piercer, because knowledgeable piercers know they need to use longer jewelry to account for swelling.

This is the reason many initial jewelry pieces are longer than the regular ones. The longer ones are used for swelling and the jewelry is changed once the swelling is gone. If you feel you didn’t get proper jewelry and if you feel the jewelry is too short, go back to the studio and demand a longer jewelry piece.

What if you have a healed piercing and the jewelry still cuts into the skin? This should never happen with healed piercings so it’s either a sign of improperly fitted jewelry or a swelling. If your piercing is healthy (no swelling or other signs of infection), you will need to get new jewelry. It is vital for your body jewelry to be long enough to sit comfortably: it should never cut into your skin.

The Labret vs Lip Piercing: The Differences

vertical-labretThere is some confusion about labret and lip piercings. These two words are often considered to be synonyms describing any piercing through the lip. However, there is a difference.

The Labret is, simply put, just one of the many possible lip piercings. There are many other lip piercing placements that are not considered “labret” placement.

The confusion comes from the name itself. “Labret” comes from the Latin name for the lip (labrum). However, not all lip piercings are considered to be Labrets, since many of them have their unique names.

To make the confusion even further, “labret” is often a word used to describe a particular type of a jewelry, a labret stud. This type of jewelry is often used for lip piercings (not just for the Labret piercing), and it can also be used for some other piercing types.

What is the Labret?

The Labret, as a piercing name and placement, describes one particular type of a lip piercing. Namely, this is a piercing done through the lower lip, typically placed at the center and not to the side.

It’s important to note that with this placement, the piercing is not actually attached to the lip and do not go through the lip itself. It’s actually done just above the chin, under the lip and when your lower lip meets the chin. This is the most common placement for the Labret. Some people consider only this placement to be the “true” Labret piercing. Other lip piercings may be known under other names but they are not considered Labret in the true sense of the word.

Of course, some opinions differ. Some people consider several different types of lip piercings to be labrets. For example, a lip piercing that is not done centrally on the lower lip but to the sides. Another popular variation is a vertical labret, the one that goes from the lip itself to the chin and has both holes on the outside.

What is important to know, however, is that “labret” is not a synonym for a lip piercing: while all labret piercings are lip piercings, not all lip piercings are labrets.

The Labret piercing has a long history among Native Americans and in some parts of Africa. It is a very ancient type of body modification. It gained more prominence on the West in late 20th century. Some of the newer forms of lip piercings are a product of contemporary interest in body modifications but the Labret itself is very old in origin.

Interesting fact: “Labret” can be pronounced in two different ways, as “lay-bret”, not “luh-bray”. There is no clear consensus about which one is the correct way to pronounce it, though some experts are more favorable of the “luh-bray” pronunciation. That being said, “lay-bret” pronunciation tends to be more common among general population.

What is a Lip Piercing?

A lip piercing is any piercing done on the lip (upper or lower lip), regardless of the placement. Some lip piercings are Labrets, but others have different names. Since there are so many possible placements for a lip piercing, there are many different types of lip piercings performed today. Many of these piercings have their unique names and Labret is just one of them.

In this sense, the Labret is a lip piercing done centrally on the bottom lip. Another type of a lip piercing (as defined by a different placement) will have its unique name. The most popular forms of lip piercings other than the Labret are: Monroe, Madonna, Medusa, Philtrum, Jestrum and various types of the so-called “Bites” piercings.

What is a Labret Stud?

A labret stud (also known as simply “labret”, to confuse matters even more) is a jewelry type usually used for lip piercings. It’s a stud with a bead or another decoration on one end and a flat base on the other. These studs resemble nostril studs (also known as “nose bones”) a lot.

The decorated part of the jewelry is placed outside of the mouth while the flat base is located inside the mouth. Labret studs are often lightweight and discreet, though they can be very pretty and nicely ornamented.

It’s also important to note that most types of lip piercings use labret studs – they are not reserved for the Labret piercing only! Also, it’s possible to use labret studs for other types of piercings (not just lip piercings). It all depends on comfort and the person’s individual preferences.

Rare Ear Piercings: Ragnar

ragnarThe Ragnar piercing is a special version of the snug piercing. It’s also known as “deep snug” and it’s considered a special placement and a modification of the more popular snug piercing type. As such, it’s not as popular as its more common counterpart.

However, this is a very interesting piercing variation so it’s definitely something to try if you’re looking for a reliable but unique ear piercing.

What Makes Ragnar Piercing Different?

Ragnar is a special, rare piercing performed on the ear cartilage. For a piercing to be called “Ragnar”, it has to be performed on a specific place, on the point where the earlobe blends into the helix. However, unlike the regular snug piercing this one is made to extend and go all the way through the outer rim of the ear. This way, the cartilage is deeply pierced and the jewelry exits on the other side of the ear.

This is a very effective piercing type, and while it’s considered a variation of a snug piercing, it’s vital to keep in mind that it should be treated as a unique piercing, especially when it comes to procedure and aftercare. Ragnar passes through so much tissue, which make it more complex than many other ear piercings. While this is not a fully complex piercing, it’s undoubtedly more sensitive and complicated to perform than a regular snug. Therefore, it’s absolutely vital to choose a piercer who is experienced with Ragnar piercings and who knows how to perform them right. You do not wish to end up with a scar tissue, infection or another problem. While this piercing type is not problematic on its own, the fact it’s rare makes it necessary to be careful.

Ragnar is a type of a horizontal piercing, which is always unique to see on an ear. Horizontal ear piercings are very effective and they add a special visual effect, so they are made to attract attention. What makes Ragnar special is that it creates a very unique look, since it’s made to look like the jewelry has one ball inside the ear rim while the other one is on the outside edge of the ear.

Pay Special Attention

If you wish to have a Ragnar piercing, there are some things you need to think about. Like it’s said above, it’s absolutely crucial to find a piercer who is experienced with this piercing type. In addition to this, pay close attention to:

  • Ragnar passes through a large amount of tissue, which makes aftercare more complex. Cartilage is sensitive so it has to be touched with care. Since this piercing goes through major points in the ear cartilage it makes the piercing not only sensitive but fragile. The piercing takes months to heal (often close to a year to fully heal), so it’s important to be careful with the aftercare. In addition to regular aftercare measures (cleaning your piercing with saline solution), you need to make sure not to hurt your ear in any way. Avoid any harsh chemicals near your ear, including shampoos and skin products. Do not sleep on your ear for at least several weeks (perhaps even more). Keep your hair away from your ear. Be very careful when dressing up or taking your clothes off. It’s absolutely vital not to touch or hurt your piercing. It goes without saying: you should not twist or turn jewelry in any way. It’s important to let your new Ragnar piercing heal.
  • The most common jewelry type for a Ragnar piercing is a simple straight barbell. While this piercing is a relatively long for an ear cartilage piercing, it’s still shorter than Industrial piercings, so no special barbells are needed. In other words, a regular barbell will do – you don’t need one that’s super-long. Keep in mind: Industrial piercings are actually two piercings at one and while the jewelry is long the actual pierced area is smaller than that of Ragnar. Ragnar pierces more tissue. For this reason, some people opt for barbells made of flexible material rather than metal barbells. Flexible barbells but less strain on the tissue, which minimizes risk of migration, rejection and other problems. Also, flexible jewelry is more likely to adjust to the ear’s natural curves. On the other hand, metal jewelry is generally more reliable, so you may consider it for your Ragnar piercing once it’s fully healed. Some people use metal barbells as initial jewelry and they don’t have any problems, so it depends on the case.
  • Knowledgeable piercer? Finding a good piercer for a Ragnar piercing might not be easy. Even some highly experienced piercers are unfamiliar with this piercing type. Of course, the more experienced a piercer is, the more chances they will know how to handle a Ragnar. That being said, always try to go for someone who’s actually performed this piercing in the past. Ask for photos and credentials before you decide on a piercer.
  • Since Ragnar passes through a lot of cartilage tissue, it is bound to be painful. As you probably know, all ear cartilage piercings are painful to some degree. Since this one is particularly long, you can expect some degree of pain. However, there are certainly piercings that are more painful than Ragnar. People with Ragnar tend to agree that it’s worth a pain, so this should not prevent you from getting a Ragnar piercing if you want. That being said, this is definitely not a piercing for beginners or those who hate pain.

Mistakes to Avoid Before Getting Your Piercing Done

ear_piercingThere are some well-known piercing and aftercare mistakes you need to avoid.

They are vital for ensuring your safety and well-being. The only way to avoid problems is not to do anything stupid, and some of the mistakes are so common that it’s worth reminding people over and over again what not to do when it comes to their piercings.

Here is a list of additional mistakes to avoid even before you get your piercing done:

Not Knowing what You Want

This is a common mistake that’s often overlooked. If you want to get pierced, you need to have at least a basic idea of what you want in terms of piercing type and placement. If all you want is to “be pierced” but without any idea of a piercing you actually want, perhaps it’s best to wait for a while until you figure out what is that you truly want or if piercing is really the best idea for you.

Also, just because your friends have a particular piercing doesn’t mean it will fir you and your lifestyle. Think about what works for you and what would make you happy. It may be different than what makes your friends happy.

Piercing Yourself

Perhaps the worst idea in the history of bad ideas. You should never pierce yourself. It doesn’t matter how many articles you’ve read about the procedure or how many videos you’ve watched. It doesn’t matter if you think you can do it properly. Don’t. It’s a bad idea any way you look.

You are not a professional piercer and you do not know what you’re doing. Not to mention that even professional piercers often have another knowledgeable piercer perform procedures on them. Piercing yourself is a very, very bad idea.

Being Pierced by a Friend

Another huge mistake. Unless your friend is a professional piercer working in a reliable piercing studio, it’s a very bad idea to let them pierce you. Your friend is not a professional and just because they’ve seen how it’s done doesn’t mean they know how to do it. Also, chances are that your friend’s place is not the most sanitary environment to get pierced. You should avoid this at all costs. Find another, safe activity for friendship bonding and get pierced by a professional.

Shady Piercing Places

Another thing to consider is the studio. Do not allow to be pierced in a place known for being shady. They may have lower prices but it’s for a reason! Just because someone claims to be a professional with a proper studio doesn’t mean they truly are!

In order to stay safe you need to research studios in your area. Find out which is the best one and get pierced there. Yes, even if it means paying a little more. It’s better to give more money for a professional service than to be pierced by someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing.

Also, a lot of that will depend on the studio itself. Reliable studios that adhere to safety and hygiene standards employ knowledgeable staff. This is one of the ways to know you’re in good hands.

Getting Pierced at the Mall

This one is only marginally better than having your friend pierce you at their garage. Do not do this! The staff at a mall kiosk is not professional. They are required to pass one short course and are allowed to pierced customers with little or even no experience. Even worse, getting pierced at a mall often means being pierced with a gun, which is something you should avoid at all costs.

Also, jewelry sold at a mall is typically of lower quality than those offered at professional jewelry shops or reputable piercing studios. You don’t want to wear this cheap, poorly made jewelry. This is why getting pierced at a mall is a bad idea altogether. It’s just not worth saving a few bucks.

Functional Piercings

Functional PiercingsYou’ve probably heard of the so-called “functional piercings”, but you may be unsure what this term means. As the name implies, functional piercings are those that can serve a specific piratical function for the wearer. In other words, those are piercings that are not purely decorative and whose purpose is not only aesthetic.

One can say that all piercings can serve a purpose other than pure aesthetics: they are great for expressing the wearer’s individuality and style. Some piercings and jewelry types can also be used to signify belonging to specific groups or supporting specific causes.

However, for a piercing to be considered truly functional, it has to have an immediate practical purpose. The best example of these functional piercings are genital piercings: these piercings serve an important purpose for the wearer – they are made to enhance sexual pleasure.

Genital Piercings and Pleasure

While not all genital piercings are also functional piercings, it’s important to note that many are. In fact, genital piercings are so great precisely because they can be both aesthetic and functional. Many times, the placement for a genital piercing is chosen based on the intended goal – enhancing sexual pleasure for the wearer or the wearer’s partner.

There are many erogenous zones men and women have, and many times, placing a piercing and jewelry on these erogenous zones make the pleasure stronger. These piercings are made to hit these precise spots and enhance the pleasure.

This pleasure enhancement can happen during all stages and types of sexual activity, from masturbation to intercourse. Some piercings and jewelry types are specially designed to stimulate the wearer’s partner during intercourse.

Opinions vary when it comes to the end result. Some people claim the pleasure enhancement is not that high while others say piercings are the only thing that can make them reach orgasm. This is particularly true for women who are otherwise unable to reach an orgasm. These women find very enjoyable to have a piercing done on the clitoral hood (Vertical Clitoral Hood piercing) since the jewelry is positioned in such a way to stimulate the clitoris. Of course, this is only one example of a functional piercing.

Functional genital piercings can also be used to enhance the pleasure for the wearer’s partner. For example, Apadravya piercing is a popular male genital piercing that is said to be very stimulating for women during vaginal intercourse. Similarly, many claim that Ampallang piercing is stimulating for the receiving partner during anal sex.

Another way to use functional piercings is for weights. Piercings can be enhanced by adding some weight to them to enhance the experience. There are specially designed weights you can use for this purpose. It’s another great way to make your experience more stimulating and use your piercings for sexual pleasure.

Weights for Piercings

tongueWeights are a great way to add something extra to your piercing or a sex toy.

While it’s possible to use any sort of a weighting device to achieve the same result, it’s always best to use specialized devices made just for this purpose.

There are many different weights you can use. These small but powerful weights are made to be used on piercings and sex toys to enhance the sensation.

What Do Weights Do?

You may wonder what a small weight can do to your piercing or a sex toy. The answer is: a lot. A small weight carefully placed on the jewelry or a toy will increase the weight of the piece. This is very sensual and pleasurable, especially if used on very sensitive body parts, such as nipples or genitalia.

In many ways, heavy, sturdy toys and jewelry increase the pleasure. They put the pressure on the tissue and pull the skin, which is arousing to many people. While some of this tension can be created manually or using other devices, small weights are ideal for this purpose.

Weights made for piercings and adult toys are specially designed to be attached to jewelry or toys in numerous ways. Typically, it is done using “S” hooks or another type of hooks. Sometimes, chains and ropes are used for this purpose. Some jewelry pieces and sex toys will come with chains and hooks so they are designed with added weights in mind. The weights are small in size so they are not a nuisance while still providing that sensual feeling and added stimulation.

The best weights are made of body-friendly steel material so they are sturdy, strong and reliable. They are safe to be used on the body and they will last you for a long time.

How to Use Weights

There are many people who find this added weight stimulating, so weights can be used in numerous ways. They can be used alone or for some kinky games with a partner. That being said, it’s important to be careful when using the weights. Since they stretch the tissue it’s vital not to leave them on for too long or else you are risking tears and other damage to the tissue. Also, in case you wish to use them for piercings keep in mind that they can make piercings stretch. This is fine if stretching results is what you want but if not, be aware of the unwanted stretching weights can bring.

Just like with any other toy or jewelry, it’s important to be careful and to use weights with awareness. If used properly, weights can add a lot to your sex life and ensure that extra satisfaction you sure want to experience.

There are numerous ways in which you can use the weights. In a way, the only limit is your imagination! Here are some commons ways to use these small weights:

  • Adding Weights to Piercings. One of the most common ways to use weights is to add them to piercings, particularly those located at sensitive body places. Most people prefer to use them on nipples and genital piercings. Both men and women like to enhance the feeling by attaching weights to their genital jewelry or nipple jewelry.
  • Adding Weights to Sex Toys. There are numerous sex toys that feel much better with some added weight applied. Weights enhance the pleasure and make the area more sensitive. They are particularly great to use during BDSM and other kink games between partners. Of course, you may use weights with toys for some fun alone time.
  • Piercing Stretching. While stretching with weights is not the most reliable method and other methods are often preferred, it’s possible to stretch your piercings using weights. Once the piercing is fully healed you can add weights to the jewelry in order to stretch the piercing to a larger gauge.
  • Ball Stretching. There are many men who like to stretch their balls to achieve low-hangers. There are numerous stretching devices specially designed for this purpose. Some of these weights and stretchers come with hooks or chains so additional weights can be applied to make the effect even more pronounced. Also, there are some ball weights specially designed to accommodate additional weights. One of the most popular stretchers of this type is a Parachute Ball Stretcher. It comes with special chains so weights of different sizes can be added to it.

Acrylic as a Body Jewelry Material

Darkside Acrylic Segment Ring

Darkside Acrylic Segment Ring

Acrylic is one of the materials used for body piercing jewelry. This is a very lightweight material so it’s very comfortable to wear.

Also, acrylic offers other advantages to metal jewelry and it’s ideal for those who wish to avoid metal jewelry pieces.

Acrylic as a Material

Acrylic is one of the most popular plastic materials. There are some other plastics used for body jewelry, such as silicone and Lucite. However, Acrylic is by far the most popular plastic material used for body jewelry.

I provides numerous advantages for those who wish to use this material. First of all, it is plastic and not metal, so it makes for great unconventional jewelry. Metal body jewelry is often too heavy, which may cause discomfort. Acrylic, on the other hand, provides perfect comfort for the wearer. Most of the time you won’t even know that the jewelry is there.

Another thing to keep in mind is that metal jewelry is not always a good option. Metal detectors in airports can sometimes be triggered by metal body jewelry. In these situations, it makes sense to wear jewelry made of plastics.

Metal jewelry is also forbidden in certain circumstances, such as medical tests and procedures. Sometimes, hospitals prohibit the use of metal body jewelry both for patients and visitors. In these situations it makes sense to wear non-metallic body jewelry and Acrylic is great for this purpose.

Some Points of Warning

  • While Acrylic jewelry is comfortable and generally safe for use, it’s vital to keep some things in mind if you decide to wear jewelry made of this material:
  • Some grades of Acrylic are FDA approved and they are safe to be used as body jewelry.
  • Acrylic jewelry is suitable only for short-term wear. It should not be worn at all times.
  • Jewelry made of Acrylic is only suitable for fully healed, healthy piercings. Never use Acrylic jewelry as initial jewelry for your piercing.
  • Avoid wearing Acrylic jewelry in the mouth or genitals.
  • Acrylic jewelry cannot be autoclaved.
  • Since Acrylic is damaged by alcohol you need to be very careful when cleaning your jewelry made of this material.

Most Popular Body Jewelry Types

Popular Jewelry TypesThere are many different and unique body jewelry types in the world. Body jewelry is varied and comes in many different shapes, sizes and styles.

These are the most popular types of body jewelry:

Captive Bead Rings

Captive Bead Ring, also known as “CBR”, is the most popular body jewelry style in the world. These rings are so popular that many people call any body jewelry piece “a ring”, even if it’s not a ring at all.

Captive Bead Rings are circular in shape. They have a removable ball or charm pressured by both sides to keep it in place. To open the ring one has to remove the ball, which is usually done using specially designed ring opening pliers. To close the ring, it’s best to use ring closing pliers in order to avoid damage to the ring.

These rings are widely used for almost all piercing types. They are very practical and relatively affordable, so it’s not surprising they are so popular. One downside to these rings is that it’s easy to lose the bead so it’s advisable to always carry a replacement bead in order to keep your jewelry in place.

Barbells

Barbells are among the most popular jewelry types in the world. They come in many different styles and sizes and they can be used for almost any piercing imaginable. The decorations vary significantly: some barbells are very plain and simple while the others are richly ornamented.

Each barbell has a shaft and a ball on each end. The balls are threaded to the shaft and there are two ways to make a threading. Internally threaded barbells have a ball with a threaded post and the shaft is smooth. Externally threaded barbells have a shaft with a threaded post. Internally threaded barbells are much better and safer to use.

Depending on the shape of the shaft, barbells can be divided into:

  • Straight barbells: They have a straight shaft with a ball on each side.
  • Curved barbells: They have a curved shaft. They are often used for navel piercings.
  • Circular barbells: They have a curved shaft and resemble rings that are not fully closed.
  • Spirals: These shaft have a spiral or wavy shaft.
  • Industrial barbells: They look like straight barbells, only with a much longer shaft.

Studs

Studs are relatively simple jewelry pieces particularly popular for lip, tongue and nostril piercings. Studs include a post with a decoration on one end and a flat or round base on the other end. The decoration is typically simple: a bead or a small gem. The base is often wider than the shaft to prevent the jewelry to fall out.

Studs are often worn in lip piercings, where they are known as labret studs. Labrets have wide, flat bases on the end. Studs are also popular for nose piercings, where there are known as “Nose Bones”. Studs are typically easy to put on and remove.

Ear Plugs

Ear plugs are jewelry pieces specially designed for stretched earlobes and other types of stretched piercings. They are made in larger gauges to accommodate the stretched piercing. Many of these plugs are made in organic materials, such as glass, wood, stone, horn & bone. Plugs can also be made of metals.

There are several distinctive ear plug types: double flared, single flared and no-flared plugs. Plugs without flares and those with only one flare require O rings to keep them in place.

Ear plugs should not be confused for flesh tunnels, another popular jewelry type. Unlike plugs, tunnels and earlets have a hole in the middle. Flesh tunnels also come as double flared, single flared or no flared designs.

Piercing Decisions: Do Your Research

Piercing DecisionsGetting a new piercing is a very rewarding experience, but also an important decision. In order to be fully satisfied with your new piercing and its results, it’s worth to think about it beforehand. Acting on a whim may seem exciting and spontaneous but it’s not the best way to go. Remember, piercings are a form of body modification and as such, they should not be treated lightly.

Since piercings are done on the body there are numerous health and safety concerns you need to know about. This is why it’s highly recommended to always think beforehand and get informed before you decide to get a piercing.

Are Piercings Permanent?

Some people wonder if piercings are permanent and if this is the reason why one should be careful when getting a piercing. Generally speaking, the reason one needs to think before getting a piercing is not really about the permanent nature of piercings. The truth is, piercings do not need to be permanent.

While many piercings do leave scars and marking when retired, many piercings can be retired easily and without any trace. It means that piercings are not permanent the way some other body modifications are. In fact, maintaining a piercing is often an effort. Often times, all one needs to do to retire a piercing is to take the jewelry out and the hole will close on its own. Of course, it’s not always that easy – some types of piercings are more difficult to retire and will leave an open hole in some cases (particularly true for piercings stretched to very large gauges). However, it is true that so many piercings can be retired without a problem.

In this sense, one doesn’t need to worry that a piercing is a permanent modification. However, getting a piercing is still a big deal. If you intend to wear your piercing for years you will need to come to terms about having a piercing. It often involves people’s reactions. These reactions are not always positive (many people with piercings face discrimination on the job, for example). This isn’t a reason for anyone to give up on piercings but it’s definitely something to think about when deciding to get pierced. It is one of the reasons why you should be informed before making such a decision.

Health Issues

Another reason why you should do your research before getting a piercing is health. Health and safety are the most important things to think about when deciding on a piercing. Remember, piercings are body modifications and as such, they can affect your health and overall wellbeing if something goes wrong.

This doesn’t mean that piercings are dangerous. On the contrary: in the hands of an experienced, reliable piercer, they are very safe. This is why it’s vital to do your research and find the most reliable piercing studio and the most experienced piercer you can get. It’s an imperative to be pierced by people who have all the knowledge and technology to do it right.

Choosing a good piercer will guarantee that you have an access to all the necessary information you need regarding the procedure, aftercare, safe jewelry choices and other aspects of having a piercing. A good piercer will also instruct you on how to recognize a potential problem with your piercing, such as an infection, migration, rejection or another issue.

For all these reasons, it’s vital to get informed about all of the aspects of the procedure and having a particular piercing before you decide to book an appointment. Keep in mind that such a decision should never be done without prior research.

Why Are Captive Bead Rings so Popular?

Why Are Captive Bead Rings so PopularCaptive Bead Rings are among the most popular jewelry styles for piercings. In fact, they are so common that they may be considered the most popular jewelry type.

Captive Bead Rings (CBRs) are very versatile so they can be used for almost any piercing imaginable. It’s therefore not surprising that they are so common.

In fact, they are so popular that many people equate them with body jewelry of any kind. Ever heard of people talking about navel rings or eyebrow rings? While many people use CBRs for navel, eyebrow and other types of piercings, there are more common jewelry styles appropriate for these piercings. However, all these jewelry styles are often known under a collective name of “rings”. This is, in large part, due to the fact that Captive Bead Rings are so popular.

Captive Bead Rings: Design

Each Captive Bead Ring has a specific design setting it apart from any other jewelry style. A captive bead ring is typically round in shape so it makes a circle. One important aspect of a Captive Bead Ring is the opening and closing mechanism – the bead itself. Each Captive Bead Ring has a small opening to fit the bead. The bead itself it pressed by the sides of the ring, thus keeping it in place and preventing the ring to be opened. Beads typically have small indentations so the end points of the ring can fit.

Beads typically have small indentations so the end points of the ring can fit. This is a pretty standard and recognizable design.

However, this doesn’t mean that CBRs are plain or boring. While the basic design is standard, there are many ways to make a Captive Bead Ring unique and more interesting. In fact, Captive Bead Rings are very versatile and they can be used almost anywhere. There are many different rings to use so it would be incorrect to say that these rings are “ordinary”, despite their huge popularity.

One of the best things about CBRs is how the basic design can be modified and enhanced to produce jewelry of varied styles. Some of the rings are very simple, with a plain bead of the same color as the rest of the ring. Others have beautiful beads done in many different colors and patterns. Some beads include a sparkly gem. Also, some rings include additional decorations, such as charms or chains. All these additions can make for a very decorated jewelry piece that doesn’t resemble a plain-looking Captive Bead Ring.

Popularity of Captive Bead Rings

There are numerous reasons why CBRs are so popular. Here are the most important of them:

  • They are practical. Captive Bead Rings are comfortable and easy to wear. While they take some level of practice to open and close, once you know how to do it they are very easy to use.
  • They are reliable. Captive Bead Rings are among the most reliable body jewelry types. They are not easy to get snagged on clothing and they typically don’t pose much problem for long-term wear. It makes them a very good choice for body jewelry.
  • They are versatile. CBRs can be used for almost any piercing type. Almost any piercing can accommodate a Captive Bead Ring, starting from simple earlobe piercings to some genital piercings.
  • They are beautiful. As described above, CBRs can be decorated in many different ways to achieve different looks and styles. The basic design is not a limit so there are many different styles to choose from. As a jewelry type, Captive Bead Rings are very elegant, starting from the simple, plain-looking ones to the richly ornamented pieces.
  • They are a classic. Simply put, a CBR is a classic jewelry piece used for so many piercings and in so many situations. It is not surprising that people always go back to this foolproof design.
