What if Nose Stud Keeps Falling Out?

nose stud keeps falling outNose studs are beautiful jewelry pieces for nostril piercings. They are among the most popular styles of nose piercings, along with nose screws. These gorgeous studs are both beautiful and discreet, so you can wear them in many different situations. Most people never have any problems with them. However, some people report that they might dislocate or even fall out of the piercing hole. What if your nose stud keeps falling out?

The main thing you need to establish is the reason why your nose stud keeps falling out. Sometimes, it is due to the improper piercing. Other times, it is because your jewelry is not the right one. And in some cases, it is because the wearer doesn’t take a proper care of the piercing. It is important to figure out the reason before you can stop this from happening.

Nose Stud Keeps Falling Out: Why is This Happening?

Here are the main reasons why a nose stud keeps falling out:

  • Improper piercing: If the piercer doesn’t have much experience, you might end up with a placement that is not really good for your anatomy. For example, your nostril piercing might be too high or too low, which makes it more difficult to wear the jewelry. Or your piercer might pierce you with a piercing needle that is too thick for a standard nose piercing, which means that most nose jewelry pieces won’t fit.
  • Improper jewelry: Sometimes, jewelry is the one that is not correct. It might be faulty so it might not sit properly in your piercing hole. This is why it’s important to choose only high-quality nostril jewelry and avoid any cheap jewelry you can find at the malls or other similar places. Or the jewelry piece itself might be fine but it’s too small for your piercing. Nose studs have a small ball on the end but if the gauge (thickness) of the jewelry is not the right for your nose piercing the ball will be too small and will not keep your nose stud inside your piercing.
  • Improper care: Maybe you just like to touch and twist your jewelry. This is not a good way to go. You should never handle your nose jewelry or any other type of piercing jewelry. Twisting and turning your jewelry is just not the right way to go. It is best if you don’t touch your nose jewelry at all. Also, pay attention to how you blow your nose: you need to do that with care.

Nose Stud Keeps Falling Out: Solutions

If your nose stud keeps falling out, there are several solutions you may try. The solution will depend on the reason why the stud doesn’t fit, so it’s important to know where the problem is. If it’s due to you touching your nose stud too much, the solution is simple: keep your hands away from your nostril piercing!

In other situations, however, you will probably need to change either your piercing or jewelry. Find a reliable piercer and consult them. They can tell you if your nostril piercing is correct and if the placement is good. They can also recommend the right type of jewelry for you. Also, in the case your nostril piercing is all wrong a good piercer can pierce you again.

Choosing Different Nostril Jewelry

In the case your nostril jewelry is not the right one, you will need to change it. The first thing you need to know is the gauge of your piercing. You will need to order jewelry in the same gauge. Typically, nostril piercings are done at small gauges, such as 20 gauge, 18 gauge and 16 gauge, though some piercers do them at 14 gauge. If you are unsure, go to your piercer to check. It is absolutely vital to use nostril jewelry in the same gauge as your piercing.

When choosing a nose stud, pick the one with a bit bigger ball on the end. Yes, it will be more difficult to get inside the piercing but it will also be more difficult to fall out.

Finally, consider other jewelry options. Nose studs are not the only jewelry types you can wear in your nostril piercing. There are also popular nose screws that have a curved side that go inside the nostril and they are less likely to fall out. Other jewelry styles such as L-shapes and Fishtails are also less likely to fall out. Or you may opt for a simple yet effective Captive Bead Ring: these are even less likely to fall out of your piercing.

  1. I have peirced my nose myself at home with an earring and Im worried if I pushed it all the way in or not because it keeps sliding out a little and I’m worried to go to sleep and having it come all the way out because I sleep rough and I mostly sleep on the side I peirced it on so I need suggestions pleaseee ASAP!!!

  2. Dear Jasmine,

It is not a good idea to get pierced at home all by yourself. You need to make sure that your piercing stays healthy and infection-free. Also, it might be useful to visit a reliable piercer to check if you managed to fully pierce your nostril or not. It might be for the best to let the piercing heal and then get pierced by a professional. Also, keep in mind that an earring is not a proper jewelry for a nostril piercing. You should get a Nose Bone, Nose Screw or an appropriate ring that can accommodate a nostril piercing.

    Hope this helps!
