Are Genital Piercings Right for Me?

Genital PiercingGenital piercings are popular but still often misunderstood form of body modification. There are many piercing enthusiasts who would gladly have many piercings all over their body, save for their genitalia. On the other hand, and as curious as it may sound, there are people who don’t have any piercings – except for genital ones. Obviously, the choice of piercing is a highly personal one and there are no two people who will approach this subject in the identical manner. What is important to know is that genital piercings are popular and if you are interested in them you are definitely not alone.

Is it Right for Me?

Many people wonder if genital piercings are the right choice for them and if piercing such a sensitive area brings unwanted consequences. In a way, this sort of attitude is understandable. After all, genitalia are highly sensitive and people want to keep them as healthy and functional as possible.

On the other hand, it’s important to know that, at the end of the day, these are piercings just like any other. While it’s true genital piercings may seem more extreme or even exotic, the truth is: this is a piercing like any other. Meaning: the same rules apply.

Just like with any other piercing, when deciding to get a genital piercing, it’s important to ask yourself the following things:

  • Would I like to have this sort of piercing?
  • Which particular piercing am I interested in?
  • Will this piercing fit my lifestyle?
  • Am I informed enough to know about the procedure and aftercare?
  • Did I do my research to find a reliable, experienced piercer?

All of these questions are crucial to ask yourself before you decide to get a genital piercing.

Would You Like to Have a Genital Piercing?

This is probably the first and most basic thing to ask yourself. There are many reasons why you might wish to get a genital piercing, just like there are many reasons why you might not want to have one. Think about yourself, your preferences and your desires. Usually, the idea of having a genital piercing doesn’t come to those who absolutely hate the idea. So, let’s just say you are intrigued. Good. This is a great way to go.

Your reasons for wanting to have a genital piercing are your own and you don’t have to explain them to anyone. Some of the most common reasons to get this sort of piercing are aesthetics and functionality. Namely, genital piercing look good but they can also make sex more pleasurable for you and your partner.

Your Choice of Piercing

Once you have decided that genital piercings are for you, it’s important to think about the exact type of a piercing. Chances are that you already have some ideas. After all, people rarely think about wanting to pierce “something down there” – they usually have a pretty good idea on the piercing they want to get.

Before you make a final decision, though, search around. Get informed about all the good and the bad sides of this piercing. It’s also helpful to talk to an experienced piercer. They can give you a lot of advice and help you decide.

Genital Piercing and Your Lifestyle

Chances are that a genital piercing can fit your lifestyle, whatever it may be. In a way, genital piercings are more versatile and suitable for many different lifestyles because they are largely invisible in the workplace and in everyday life. For this reason, it’s often impossible to tell if someone has a genital piercing or not.

To be sure that no aspect of your life will suffer because of a genital piercing, think about any problematic areas. Are you physically active in sports? If in doubt, check with your doctor. What about your partner? What do they think about the idea? Keep in mind that when it comes to a genital piercing it affects your sexual partners. It doesn’t mean that you have to ask for their permission to get this piercing but depending on your partner’s feeling toward it you may need to adapt to new circumstances. For example, if your partner doesn’t like it, you will probably need to remove the jewelry before the intercourse.

Do Your Research

Once you are ready to have a particular genital piercing, it’s time to do a research. Find about the procedure, healing time and aftercare instructions. It’s very important to be informed about these things. It’s also highly advisable to ask your chosen piercer before you make an appointment. It’s vital that you are familiar with all aspects of a procedure.

Also, if you are scared of pain, you may wish to research this aspect of a procedure, too. However, keep in mind that focusing too much on the pain usually makes the whole experience more uncomfortable.

Choose a Good Piercer

The last step before you get a genital piercing is to choose a good piercer. It goes without saying for all types of piercings, but it becomes even more crucial for genital piercings. Since genital piercings are highly specialized, not all piercers can perform them properly. Perhaps your local piercer is not experienced enough with this type of piercings, in which case you will need to search elsewhere. Remember: you are looking not just for a reliable, experienced general piercer but a good piercer who is experienced in the type of a piercing you want to get.

  1. This is the best blog on piercings I’ve run across. Informative, fairly detailed and specific and with a sense of humor. I wish I had discovered The Chain gang before I performed my self made Jacobs Ladder, however I have enjoyed your articles none the less. It is quite difficult to obtain information on this subject without incurring scorn, disgust and laughter. I don’t think I did such a bad job on my ladder, I had before performed a dbl. nipple piercings on my nipples which I’m very pleased with, but it’s not so easy to say, hey what do you think of my new piercings? I also was not fully aware of the healing time required before my procdure. Thank you for your blog, I’ll continue to read it with much interest. Also, you may edit and post what I have shared today if you would like. 02/14/16
