Prince Albert piercing is the most popular male genital piercing in the world. Its popularity among men of all sexual orientations means that there are numerous jewelry choices you can use for your PA piercing. However, before you choose the best Prince Albert jewelry for yourself, it is important to get the best fit. In other words, you need to choose the appropriate Prince Albert barbell size or ring size.

What is the Right Prince Albert Barbell Size?

There is an easy answer to the question of the best Prince Albert barbell size. The barbell or ring you choose for your PA piercing needs to be of the same size as your PA piercing hole. This is the only way to go. With any piercing, it is vital to find the best fit and to wear only appropriate jewelry. Prince Albert piercing is no different.

Luckily, it is easy to choose a good ring and barbell size for your PA piercing: it has to be the same gauge as your piercing hole. In other words, you need to know the gauge you are pierced with and choose the jewelry of the same gauge. While most men choose to wear rings in their Prince Albert piercing, some opt for barbells and other jewelry types. Whatever you do, however, keep in mind that you need to use only jewelry of the exactly the same gauge as your piercing hole.

Typical Sizes

Typically, PA piercings are done at 10 gauge, though it depends on the piercer. Some piercers choose to perform a Prince Albert piercing with a larger piercing needle, such as 8 gauge. This is particularly true if you know right from the start that you wish to stretch your PA piercing.

On the other hand, it is dangerous to do a Prince Albert piercing with less than 10 gauge. Some people might opt for 12 gauge but this is very rare and can bring problems to the wearer of such piercing. In other words, most PA piercings are 10 gauge unless there is a reason for them to be of a different thickness. Chances are that your PA piercing is also 10 gauge but you need to check with your piercer to be sure. Don’t just assume that you have 10 gauge Prince Albert unless you are absolutely positive. Only then will you be able to order your jewelry and get the right Prince Albert barbell size or ring size.

What about the PA Jewelry Length?

Knowing your piercing gauge is enough to choose jewelry of the right thickness, but what about the length? This will depend on numerous factors, first of all, your anatomy. There are some standard sizes most piercers use, but again, it might be different for your individual case.

Most PA jewelry is ¾” long in the case of a curved barbell. For a more popular Captive Bead Ring, the diameter is 5/8”. This is considered a minimal comfortable diameter for a PA ring. However, keep in mind that these are just some standard sizes and it might be different in your individual case.

  1. Hi my name is Ben
I just got a pa 2weeks ago i forgot to ask for a 10 gauge so she just gave me a 14 gauge should I asked to be re-pierced?

  2. Dear Benjamin,

The 14 gauge does sound a bit too small – typical PA sizes are 12 gauge and 10 gauge. However, it all depends on your anatomy and individual circumstances. Does the piercing/jewelry feel OK? Do you notice any discomfort, burning or other issues? It is important that your PA is healthy and safe. It might be useful to visit a reliable piercer who has plenty of experience with PA piercings and ask for their opinion. A good piercer will be able to tell if you need a different PA gauge or not.
