Guide to Lip Piercings Lip piercings are among the most popular piercing types in the world. There are many different placements possible, on both the upper and the lower lip, so there are numerous lip piercing types and combinations that can be done.

Lip piercings range from easy and relatively painless to more complex and even extreme piercings, so there is something for everyone.

These piercings can be small and discreet or very prominent, depending on your choice.

Typical jewelry for lip piercings is a labret stud but many people choose to use other jewelry types, such as Captive Bead Rings. It all depends on what you like and what you find the most comfortable.

Here are the most popular and effective lip piercings:

Lower Lip Piercings

Lower lip piercings are very popular and attractive. One of them, Labret piercing, is actually the most popular lip piercing in the world. Lower lip is a good place to have a piercing because there are some placements you can do that do not interfere with talking, chewing and other activities. Here are the most popular lower lip piercing types:

Labret Piercing

Guide to Lip Piercings

Labret piercing is the most popular lip piercing in overall and, of course, the most popular lower lip piercing. It is so popular that many people associate all lip piercings with labret and call any lip piercing a labret. That being said, labret is one specific piercing type, that is, a lip piercing done centrally on the lower lip.

Typical jewelry for a labret piercing is a labret stud. Many people, however, choose different piercing types, such as Captive Bead Rings. This piercing heals relatively quickly, in just 2 or 3 months.

Vertical Labret Piercing

Vertical Labret piercing is a vertical variant of the popular labret piercing. It is done on the lower lip, typically centrally. Unlike a regular labret piercing, the vertical variant has both ends of the piercing visible on the outside.

The Vertical Labret piercing has one hole at the same place where a typical labret sits. The other hole, however, is located on the top of the lower lip. This way, you can see both ends of the jewelry. Typical jewelry for this piercing type is a curved barbell.

Upper Lip Piercings

There are many different upper lip piercings you can try. In fact, some of the most popular lip piercings are done on the upper lip. These piercings are very effective and attractive, so it is not surprising that they are so popular.

The most common types of the upper lip piercing are Madonna, Monroe and Medusa. All of these are similar to the labret piercing, only performed on the upper instead of the lower lip. That being said, there are other possible placements you can choose for your top lip piercing.

Medusa Piercing

Medusa is a piercing done centrally on the upper lip. It is performed on the little dent in the middle of the upper lip, just under the nose. The anatomical name for this dent is the philtrum, so Medusa is also known as the Philtrum piercing.

Medusa piercing is thus very similar to the Labret piercing, only performed on the upper instead of the lower lip. Common jewelry for Medusa piercing is a labret stud, although some people prefer to wear Captive Bead Rings as the preferred jewelry for their Medusa piercing.

Monroe Piercing

Guide to Lip Piercings Monroe piercing is done on the upper lip, off-center. It is typically performed on the left hand side. This piercing got its name from Marilyn Monroe’s beauty mark and it is made to look as a beauty mark.

It is one of the most popular lip piercings, and the most popular upper lip piercing. Typical jewelry for this piercing type is a labret stud.

It is important to note that many people refer to all upper lip piercings done off-center as Monroe piercings, regardless of the side.

However, many people consider only those piercings done on the left hand side to be Monroe piercings.

Madonna Piercing

Madonna piercing is an upper lip piercing done off-center on the right hand side. It is essentially the same as the Monroe piercing, only done on the opposite side of the face. In this sense, the Madonna piercing can be seen as a variation of the Monroe piercing.

Jestrum Piercing

This is a bit rarer placement, but still common enough to mention here. This is a piercing done vertically through the upper lip. This is an upper lip variant of the vertical labret. Jestrum piercing is also known as Vertical Medusa, which is logical, since Medusa is an upper lip variant of the labret piercing.

With Jestrum piercing, one end of the jewelry sits on the philtrum (the dent in the middle of the upper lip) while the other one is located on the bottom of the upper lip. This way, both ends of the jewelry are visible. This is a very attractive and effective piercing placement.

Bites Piercings

Bites Piercings are special types of lip piercings consisting of two or four piercings that are viewed as a group. Typically done on the opposing sides of the face, these piercings are very effective and attractive. Bites piercings are generally two or four general lip piercings done at the specific spot on the lips. Many of the bites piercings have unique and very inventive names.

The most popular bites piercings include:

  • Snake Bites. This piercing consists of two piercings, each located on the each side of the lower lip. It is like a Madonna and Monroe together, only done on the lower lip. Snake Bites are the most popular bites piercing.
  • Angel Bites. This is another popular form. These are a pair of lip piercings done on the upper lip, one on the each side. In other words, it is like having Madonna and Monroe together. In the case of the Angel Bites, the piercings are positioned a bit more to the side than Madonna and Monroe, but these are basically the same piercings.
  • Dahlia. This piercing combination consists of piercings done on the corner of the mouth, one piercing at the each corner.
  • Cyber Bites. This piercing combines Medusa and Labret piercings. In other words, one piercing is done centrally on the upper lip while the other is done centrally on the lower lip.
  • Dolphin Bites. These are two piercings made next to each other centrally on the lower lip.
  • Spider Bites (Viper Bites). These are two piercings made next to each other off-center on the lower lip.
  • Shark Bites. This piercing combination consists of 4 piercings. This is essentially a pair of Spider bites, done on the both sides of the face. In other words, one Spider Bites piercing (consisting of two individual piercings) is done off-center on the left side of the lower lip while the other Spider Bites piercing is done off-center on the right side of the lower lip.
  • Canine Bites. This piercing combination consists of 4 piercings, done off-center on the both sides of the upper and the lower lip. This is essentially a combination of an Angel Bites and Snake Bites piercings.

Rare Lip Piercing Types

There are some rarer lip piercing types you can also consider. While these are not as popular as other piercing types, they are also a possibility you can choose if you wish to get a lip piercing. This is a particularly good choice for those who wish something more unique and stunning.

Lowbret Piercing

Lowbret is a special variant of a labret piercing. This is a lower lip piercing with a very low placement (hence the name). It is made to sit as low as possible on the lip. Typical jewelry for this piercing is a labret stud and it looks like a labret piercing, only made lower. However, due to this low placement it is essentially a very different piercing type than a typical labret piercing and it can be uncomfortable. This is something to think about if you wish to have a lowbret piercing.

Also, keep in mind that while most lowbret piercings are done centrally, the piercing can be done off-center if this is what you prefer.

Horizontal Lip Piercing

Horizontal Lip piercing is any lip piercing done horizontally through the length of the lip. Typically, the lower lip is chosen for this piercing type, even though there are people who do a horizontal piercing on the upper lip. This piercing is more painful than other lip piercings since the lip has to go through a lot of tissue. That being said, it can look very effective so it’s not surprising that there are many people who choose this piercing type.

Ashely Piercing

Ashley piercing is a variation of a more popular vertical labret. Unlike a regular vertical labret, where both ends of the piercing are outside, Ashley piercing has one end of the jewelry outside while the other one is inside of the mouth. One bead of the jewelry sits on top of the lower lip, just like with vertical labret. The other bead, however, is not outside but located inside of the mouth. This produces a very unique looks.

Horizontal Philtrum Piercing

Horizontal Philtrum piercing is a horizontal variant of a regular Philtrum (Medusa) piercing. Keep in mind that this rare piercing placement is actually a surface piercing. It never goes inside of the mouth: it only passes through the outer part of the lip. It can look very effective but it brings usual risks associated with surface piercings.

Vertical Lowbret

This is a vertical variant of the lowbret piercing and also a low variant of the vertical labret piercing. Just like vertical labret, this piercing is positioned vertically so both ends of the jewelry are visible. Unlike the vertical labret, this one is positioned much lower on the lip. These piercings are very long and go through a lot of tissue so they are considered complex and even extreme. For this reason, they are reserved only for the adventurous.
