Industrial Piercing

An industrial piercing is one of the most popular piercing types. It’s made by driving a jewelry (usually a straight barbell) through two different holes. It’s most commonly made on the ear (the cartilaginous part, sometimes known as the scaffold). Due to the placing, this type of piercing is sometimes known as a “scaffold piercing”, or “construction piercing”, though the term “industrial” is the most common. This type of piercing is often called “the bar” piercing in the UK and Ireland.

About the Piercing

While an industrial piercing can technically refer to any two holes connected with a jewelry, it’s most commonly referred to an ear cartilage piercing. This is a popular form of piercing. During the procedure, two piercings are made: one is typically located very close to the head (anti-helix) and the other one further down the cartilage, on the opposite side of the ear (helix).

The original piercing is typically made with a 14g piercing needle, so this is the original size of industrial piercing holes. Another common size is 16g.

Sometimes, the original piercing is pierced with a flexible plastic tube that’s swapped for a metal bar when it’s completely healed. Some piercers choose to use two captive bead rings for initial piercing jewelry. This may be a more comfortable choice but it makes proper alignment of the piercings difficult. The alignment of the holes is very important because it’s vital to create proper balance. Balance is important because it will minimize the stress on the cartilage. If cartilage is stressed it can lead to infections. That’s why it’s important to hire an experienced piercer and to get pierced at a reliable piercing studio.

Typically, an industrial piercing takes around 6 months to heal. However, it can take a year to heal completely. Remember, you don’t have one pierced hole but two, and they may take different times to heal. During the healing time, it’s important to clean the piercings regularly. Clean the inside folds carefully, best using a saline solution. Use a cotton swab (not balls) drenched in warm saline solution or an unscented anti-bacterial soap. The piercing should be cleaned two times per day.

Common problem with industrial piercing is migration and scar tissue build up. If scar tissue build up occurs it’s best to wear captive bead rings to prevent further problems.

Jewelry

Industrial piercing typically uses a long straight barbell. One side of the barbell is inserted through the first piercing from behind the ear. It goes diagonally across the front of the upper cartilage and then goes through the second piercing. Jewelry is secured with a screw-on bead behind the second hole.

The straight barbells used for industrial piercings have to be extra-long so they can reach both ends (holes) of the piercing. The length used will depend on the individual ear size and the distance between holes. Typically, a 1.5 inches long barbell is used, but it’s important to measure your own ear and the diagonal distance between the holes to determine the length of the barbell you should use.

The jewelry used for an industrial piercing is simple but very effective. While straight barbells are typically used, it doesn’t mean that the jewelry itself has to be plain. The position of the piercing is very visually effective and it stands out even if the simplest straight barbell is used, so you might be satisfied with a “plain” straight barbell for your industrial piercing.

However, there are other options. For example, you can use titanium barbells in various colors to make your industrial piercing stand out. Or you may use a straight barbell with uniquely-shaped balls on the end.

Another thing to spice up your industrial piercing is to use special bars with spirals and twists. These twisted barbells look very effective and unique. You may also use straight barbells with small ornaments, such as skulls or hearts, depending on your individual style and the effect you wish to achieve.

Another type of jewelry used for an industrial piercing is a pair of captive bead rings. They are not as effective in a way that they don’t produce an effect of “connected holes” so they basically look like two piercings (which they are). However, captive bead rings may be a good choice for initial piercing, during the healing period.

Also, if you ever get bored of the typical look of the industrial piercing (two holes connected with a straight barbell) you can always use the holes to insert a different type of jewelry (such as captive bead rings) and make an industrial piercing into two piercings with different jewelry. You can always go back to the typical “industrial look” whenever you want.

Curved Barbell Design

Curved barbells are among the most popular body jewelry types. They are known for their curvature, which makes for many different jewelry styles. In essence, however, a curved barbell is the same as a straight barbell, except for the curve.

Just like a straight barbell, it has a body and a ball (or bead) on the each end. Just like a straight barbell, it can have beads of different sizes and shapes, and it can include ornaments and decorations on the body. Just like a straight barbell, it can be internally or externally threaded.

However, the curvature makes this barbell into completely different, unique jewelry pieces. Curved barbells are suitable for many different types of piercings and they can be used on many body parts.

Typically, beads can be unscrewed from one (or both) ends, for easy removal of the jewelry. Just like any other barbell, circular barbells come in different gauges. To get one that suits you, you need to know your piercing size (in gauges).

Curved Barbells: The Shape

As explained above, curved barbells are basically identical to straight barbells, except the curvature. This curvature can range greatly, which gives many different design options. The curvature can range from almost straight to completely circular. Some barbells are carefully curved to make spirals, with the ends overlapping.

When a barbell is made to be completely circular in shape, it’s a circular barbell, also known as a horseshoe barbell. Some of these barbells have a distinctive U shape instead of a circle.

J- Bars

The so-called „J-bars“ are variations of the circular barbell type. These barbells are only slightly curved, with a 90 degree bend bear one end. This gives them a charasteristic „banana“ look, so they are sometimes known as banana barbells. Just like any other barbell, a J-bar can be either internally or externally threaded.

These J-bars are very popular for vertical navel piercings. A J-bar is a good choice for a belly piercing jewelry because the shape of the barbell allows the decoartive end of the jewelry to be positioned correctly.

Jewelry Types

Curved barbells are among the most popular types of body jewelry and they are used for many different piercing types. They are particularly suitable and popular for navel, nose, tongue and eyebrow piercings, though they can also be used for certain ear piercings as well as genital piercings and nipple piercings.

Curved barbells are best suited for piercing types where captive bead rings can be worn. It needs to be emphasized, however, that circular barbells are usually heavier than captive bead rings, so this is something you need to take into account. On the other hand, circular barbells are generally easier to remove than captive bead rings, so this is one of their advantage.

To remove a circular barbell, all you need to do is unscrew one of the balls (beads). Make sure to do it with care because it’s easy to lose the bead once you remove it. To make removal easier, you may add a bit of the lube to the jewelry. When inserting the barbell, do it gently and make sure to crew the bead tightly so it doesn’t open during use.

Vertical Labret Piercing

Vertical LabretVertical labret piercing is a popular and very effective piercing style. Unlike the most common labret piercing (positioned below the lower lip), a vertical labret goes through the lower lip itself, vertically. This piercing is actually parallel to the tissue inside the lip.

Benefits and Disadvantages

Vertical labret offers not just a different visual style than the regular labret piercing, but it also offers some advantages. It’s important to understand that a common labret piercing has a hole on the inside of the mouth. It means that the back of the jewelry sits near the gum line, so it can damage it. Another problem is that it can damage the teeth. With vertical labret piercing, no part of the jewelry sits inside your mouth. The barbell simply goes through the lip, from top to the bottom. It provides more comfort and less risk to any gum or teeth damage.

On the other hand, vertical labret piercing may take longer to heal. It also tends to be more sensitive and requires more aftercare. Some food can irritate the piercing so you need to be careful during the healing process. Once it’s healed, however, vertical labret piercing offers unique visual style and it poses less risk to your tissue.

The Procedure

Vertical labret piercing requires a pretty straightforward procedure and it typically doesn’t last long. Your lip will be marked and measured. A clamp will be used before the needle is inserted. The actual piercing is made using a needle and the whole process takes about five seconds so it’s over pretty quickly.

Typically, the piercing is done from bottom up, with a 16g needle. The pain depends on your tolerance level but is typically not that bad and it’s quickly over.

The most common jewelry used for vertical piercing is a barbell. It’s possible to choose between straight and curved barbells. Curved barbells tend to be more comfortable and easier to wear, especially during the healing process.

While vertical labret piercing procedure is not difficult and it doesn’t last long, one common problem is swelling. Be prepared for a lot of swelling after getting your piercing done. This is why most piercers recommend longer barbells for your initial piercing. The swelling should go after a few days, but you need to follow the aftercare instructions carefully.

Typically, the healing period takes 8 to 10 weeks. Make sure to clean your piercing several times a day. Sea salt solution works the best, or you may use a regular salt solution or a mild anti-bacterial soap. It’s important to touch your jewelry as little as possible: don’t turn it and don’t play with it. It’s best to touch it only while you’re cleaning your piercing and then leave it alone.

Jewelry

Since vertical labret piercing is not the most common piercing type, it’s not easy to find jewelry specially made for this type of piercing. Luckily, it’s perfectly comfortable to wear standard jewelry made for many different piercing types, so it’s not difficult to find suitable jewelry for your vertical labret.

Straight and curved barbells seem to work the best. There are many different styles to choose from: the simple and elegant barbells or the more elaborate styles. Most of the times, the lip jewelry tends to be simple but effective.

When choosing jewelry for yourself, keep in mind to shop at reliable stores; it’s important to use only high-quality, body-safe jewelry. Another thing to keep in mind is the barbell length- it will largely depend on your lip.
