Avoiding Body Piercing Infections is not Rocket Science!

Body jewelry bought from a reputable dealer and going under a professional piercer’s needle are not the only two fool proof essentials to help avoid body piercing infections. Along with these two are some other necessary steps that first timers need to take. Experienced/ initiated body piercing enthusiasts can’t afford to miss these either and should not even try.

Contaminated body piercing equipment can cause Hepatitis or even HIV. If this does not make you more cautious then I don’t know what will! Another fact : Piercing guns cannot be sterilized so it’s safer to even get your ears pierced with a needle than with a gun, which is the only thing that a gun is remotely useful for, and we do not feel that it is good for that either.

Follow the simple steps mentioned below and come out of the piercing parlor cool and clean!

  • If th quality body jewelry bit is taken care of (i.e it’s nickel and other toxins free), then check the body piercing equipment. From sterilized gloves to instruments; everything should be squeaky clean, new, and or sterilized.
  • The parlor should be spic and span too and of course the piercer too. If there’s even a slightest doubt about the hygiene of the place then don’t go ahead with it there, just go to another place.
  • Get piercing done where disposable instruments are used and thrown away after single use.
  • Listen to all the personal care instructions very carefully and follow them religiously. Out of parlor does not mean out of the danger zone. Body piercing infections usually develop After you leave the piercer.

Not rocket science right? Simple but definitely not passable. These may be the difference between  a healthy you or an infected you.  :)

Body Jewelry Face Off – Facial Piercings & New Trends

Facial piercings are cool and really happening (if there are no cuts, bruises or infections). Traditional facial piercings included conventional areas that did not raise many eyebrows. However the new trends in facial piercings are not just about raising eyebrows but shocking you! If you thought labret piercing, nose, nose septum, eyebrows piercing, ear lobes were rebellious enough then you probably didn’t see this coming.

The new trends in facial piercings shining these days are:

Philtrum or Medusa PiercingBody jewelry in this one is attractively perched at the small cleft between the upper lip and the nose. Now snakes has nothing to do with it. It’s also a mere speculation that Medusa had her philtrum pierced.

Monroe or Madonna Piercing – This was perhaps invented by those for who thought moles were sexy and stunning. Imagine having a shiny body jewelry piece lighting up your face instead of  a dark mole. Many body piercing fanatics have found quite a like for such facial piercing. Small body jewelry pieces are pierced in areas around the face where moles are commonly found.

The Anti-Eyebrow Piercing – In this a two-surface body piercing jewelry piece is involved. And as the name typically suggests, this piercing is not about piercing eyebrows but lies diametrically opposing them – below the eye. Usually the first corner is near the corner of the eye and the second is farther back down – like tear drops falling. Sounds like a tear-jerker? Well it isn’t really and has found a place in the book of cool body piercings.

Alright so now you know what’s new in the facial piercing circuit and may be already twitching to try these asap. But keep in mind that facial piercings are (obviously) in your face-obvious, so if you are a professional with a piercing impulse then you may just want to take a moment to think. Others – who have already taken the body piercing plunge and want to go deeper to come out shinier than ever – will find it interesting (if already not tried).

Until then keep up the shine and safety while getting pierced.

Scarification Part 2: Branding

Scarification can be created by using many different methods. Branding is one of the most common methods used in creating a scarification body modification. There are different ways branding can be done by a professional.

STRIKE BRANDING: Strike branding is commonly used in livestock branding but practitioners of scarification sometimes use strike branding to create the body art scar. Heating a piece of metal up to the point that it burns the skin with generally second degree burns is how strike branding is done.  Although it is easier to have the design made out of a single piece of metal then heated and pressed on at once, the scar appears better in custom designs done using smaller metal sections with multiple burns. Strike branding does not leave the best scarring because sometimes the scar can be inconstant and the outside tissues surrounding the body modification are damaged causing a “spread” look when healed.

COLD BRANDING: Far less used and known then strike branding, cold branding or freeze branding has been done in the world of body modifications. Liquid nitrogen is the key element used in cold branding; it freezes the metal instead of heating it up to cause a burn. The outcome of cold branding is much like strike branding, except that when the hair grows back it will be white.

CAUTERY BRANDING: Cautery branding uses cautery iron equipment to burn the skin to create the body art modification. Cautery branding is the least used of all the branding methods.

LASER BRANDING: Most commonly used for scarification is laser branding. Laser branding or electrosurgical branding uses electricity to cut and burn the skin. This type of branding gives the professional more control over the overall design of the body modification. The professional can use laser branding to control somewhat how the modification scars over by changing the depth and damage done to the tissues. The electrosurgical device that is used for this type of branding not just burns the skin, it vaporizes it. With the skin being vaporized at a quick rate it causes less damage to the surrounding tissues which in turn makes the overall healing process less painful and much quicker than with strike branding. There are lasers that are used to remove tattoos or body hair; these types of lasers are not the same as an electrosurgical laser. The tool used in laser branding is much like the tool used by arc welders. An electric current flowing through electrodes to the “pen” type device creates the burn on the skin. Laser branding is a much better method for very detailed art work then strike branding.

Put Some Weight On your Body Piercings!

Piercings can represent a person’s personality in many different ways. The placement of the piercing(s), the size, shape, and the jewelry all help define that person’s individuality a little more. Some people like to push their bodies to limits they never thought they could reach or handle. Body modifications help them achieve this goal.

Most body modification enthusiasts enjoy stretching or gauging their piercings to larger sizes. This could be for a number of reasons. One reason could be that they want to see how far they can push their bodies to the max limit. Another could have to do with their individuality. The need to stand out in a crowd, personal preferences as far as the way they want to appear, or even sexual desires may also play a role in the decision to stretch or gauge their piercing.

The Most Common Body Piercings:

One of the most common piercings to gauge is the ear lobe. After the ear has been pierced and completely healed it can be stretched to astonishing sizes. There are different ways to gauge the ears. Tapers are very popular. These are spike like body jewelry that come in a number of different sizes, used to gradually stretch the piercing. Another way to gauge is by using weights.  Once the gauged piercing has healed, adding weights can help stretch it to greater size. “S” hooks are usually used to add the weights to the piercing.

Weights are not just used to help stretch piercings to larger sizes. Some men who practice ball stretching also enjoy adding weights to their ball weights for more pleasure or for better results. Some ball weights are specifically designed to accommodate added weights. For instance, a “Parachute Ball Stretcher” is designed so that weights can be added to the chains that are attached to the soft leather “parachute”. There are different sizes and shapes of weights that can be added to satisfy the individual’s needs.

Adding on weights to a labia piercing is not unheard of either. Women with labia piercings find that adding the weights to be very arousing and visually stimulating. The weights seem to increase the sensitivity for some women, making this to be a very fun activity. For those who are into the BDSM scene you can also use the weights in part of these practices. Being used during a bondage sessions and allowing your partner to add weights to the labia piercing can prove to be very erotic to both parties involved.

Don’t forget to check out all the different extra add on weights we have available here at The Chain Gang for all different piercings!

Feel the Vibrations

Generally speaking, body modification enthusiast love to try out new adventures products. Spicing up the bedroom play is something that is widely done by many couples. As long as both people involved are comfortable with the chosen erotic play, there are many different toys that can be very useful.  Body jewelry has come a long way since older traditional pieces. Piercings can be used in sexual endeavors with new types of jewelry. When most people think of a vibrating toy, the most common item thought of is a dildo, of course. However, there are body modification pieces that have vibrators in them that can prove to be great fun. There are also simpler toys that can also be fun.
The tongue piercing is one of the most common body piercings. The tongue is also a very sexually arousing tool. Because the tongue is easily maneuverable and already lubricated, many women find a tongue piercing to be that extra added tickle they crave.  There are a variety of different types of barbells that can be put into the tongue.  One of the simpler but effective toys that can be added onto the tongue barbell is called a French Tickler. The French Tickler is made out of silicone and comes in a variety of styles and colors. It is placed on the top of the barbell’s existing ball. Then can be used to find that hidden spot she didn’t even know was there.
Another fun toy is a vibrating barbell. These can be placed in the tongue piercing. These barbells also come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and designs. The vibrating tongue rings usually run off two watch batteries. These batteries can be purchased at a department store or a watch shop when the vibrating seems to slow down.  Some of these vibrating tongue rings include a French Tickler on top of them. This will definitely make her toes curl.  The vibrating tongue ring stimulates all the sensitive areas and the French Tickler helps gently massage her vagina for that extra stimulation.
Vibrating devices are not just limited to her pleasure. Many men enjoy that vibrating sensation as well. For the men who practice sounding, there are many different styles of sounding rods that vibrate. There are the urethral sounding rods that are smooth that incorporate a vibrator.   The vibrations from the rod are sure to hit the right spot for him (or her). Another fun vibrating sounding rod is the ribbed urethral sounding rod. The ribs are located all the way down the rod so to ensure all the right spots are being simulated. There are also penis plugs that include that feel good vibration sensation. There are many nerve endings located in the genital area, hence why the vibrating toys stimulate so well. For other fun products don’t forget to check out our Adult Adventure section and don’t be afraid to try a new toy out today.

Tongue Splitting – The Wilder Body Modifications

Body modifications have changed rapidly over the years. Modifications that used to be taboo are now greatly accepted. Tongue bifurcation or tongue splitting was not well known in the 90’s, however, now in this day and time almost everyone has at least heard of it and a lot of people have done it. Body modification enthusiasts get this alteration done for many of their own personal reasons.

There are a few different methods in which a forked tongue can be achieved. The safest, most recommended procedure is done by an oral surgeon. This procedure can cost anywhere between $500 and $3000. The doctor that does the procedure will use anesthesia and a laser to bifurcate the tongue. The laser cauterizes the tongue as it splits it, which prevents excessive bleeding.  This procedure is usually only 15 minutes long. Healing time usually only takes about one to two weeks.

Tie-off is another method that is used. This involves the tongue already being pierced and healed completely. Dental floss or sutures are used to tie a loop centrally along the tongue. Over time the loop has to be tied tighter and tighter. This process takes a while and can be very uncomfortable. Most people will make it half way and decided to cut the rest of the way to the tip of the tongue with a blade. Gauging the already healed tongue with either a larger barbell or multiple barbells also can be done to help split the tongue.

Cutting the tongue with a blade or scalping is another process that can be done. However, this is the bloodiest way the tongue can be split.  There are large blood vessels that run through the tongue, this being said, cauterizing the tongue while it is being split is the best way to stop the bleeding. Cauterizing the tongue can be very painful. Suturing the split tongue is very popular because it makes the tongue look more rounded which looks more “normal”.
The Risks Involved
Tongue splitting does have risk like all other body modifications. Severe bleeding can occur if the process is not done in a controlled professional environment. After the process is done the heal time can last up to a month. Swelling and tenderness is definitely not uncommon. Talking and eating will be very difficult at first, until the tongue is healed. Preventing infection is a major factor. It is not recommended to smoke after this process is done before it heals.

It is not uncommon that the tongue will regenerate after it is split. Its part of the body’s natural response to an open wound; heal it. After the initial split, the tongue will start to re-grow back together, even up to a year later. To prevent the tongue from growing back together, sometimes it is necessary to keep the wound open. This can be done by taking the smooth part of a Q-tip and placing it in-between the spit tongue periodically. The best way to help prevent re-growth before the split is done, is by gauging a tongue piercing to a lager gauge and allowing it to heal completely. This way the tongue is already “prepared” to stay open to the spot where the tongue ring once was.

Body Jewelry Tools

Many people who get piercings are very excited to buy new body jewelry and put it into their piercing to show it off. After your piercings are healed, you are able to change your jewelry. But this can prove to be quiet the task for some people. Luckily there are tools available to help change the jewelry out with ease.
When you are ready to change out your Captive Bead Ring a very useful tool is the ring opening pliers. Most male and female genital piercings often have Captive Bead Ring jewelry in them and these pliers are great for these type of piercings that are hard to reach. Ring opening pliers can help open the jewelry so that it can be removed and/or replaced. These pliers work very well with larger gauged jewelry. In the nose of these pliers there are little notches that are indented; these are there to help the jewelry fit snugly into the pliers so that they can open the ring properly and without damaging the jewelry.

One of the hardest parts of changing out a Captive Bead Ring is to maintain the circular shape while inserting the ball. Ring closing pliers are great to use and make changing jewelry a breeze. They come in different sizes. The small pliers are used for rings that are 7/16” or smaller. They also designed with grooves that help hold the beads while putting it into place. Larger pliers are mostly used for jewelry that is 5/8” or bigger. These as the name states are used for closing the circular ring tighter together so that the ball fits in correctly.

If you have many piercings and have difficulty changing the jewelry or hanging on to the beads, opening and closing pliers will be your new best friend. Do not forget to check out all of the different kind of tools we have available here at The Chain Gang.

Scarification: Part 1 of 3

There are different spectrum’s of body modifications from the not so extreme like body piercings to the way extreme like scarification. Scarification is considered on the extreme side of body modifications because of its nature in intentionally scaring the body using different methods. The people who chose to do this use their human body as a live canvas to display a piece of artwork, thus scarification is not considered harming oneself.

In many cultures for many of years scarification has been used for spiritual or rite of passage purposes. In modern day cultures, some people still practice this ritual for spiritual or rite of passage purposes but most people use it as a pronounced statement about themselves. There are far more tattoo artist than scarification specialist because tattooing is more popular then scarification. Finding a professional to do the scarification procedure is very important in the end result of this body modification.

The point of scarification is to create a scar on the body that will be there for life in which ever design was picked out. The scar can be created using many different methods by a professional. The 3D raised effect that scarification causes is best achieved by the correct kind of scar tissue. Hypertrophic scarring is more common in most people. The best kind of scarring that would give the best raised look would be keloid scarring. This type of scaring does not happen for everyone, it has a lot to do with ones genetics and skin tone. Darker pigmented skin usually heals with a keloid scar. As with any other body modification, the healing process is the most important in getting the perfect body art scar. Once the professional has done their part in the scarification process, it is up to the body to create the scar. Most professionals will recommend irritating the wounds to help create a larger more raised scar.

The longer the wound is unable to heal completely the better the scar will be. It is still recommended to keep the area cleaned to avoid infection. Irritating the area can be done by removing the scab that is formed during the healing process, by either picking it or rubbing it off completely. Some people use chemical agents to help irritate the open wound to make the scar more predominate. Toothpaste and citrus juice are the most commonly used irritant. Even though it is recommended to irritate the open wound to make a better scar, it is okay to allow the scarification to heal naturally on its own. With this type of body art modifications, infection is not uncommon. Keeping the wound cleaned, bandaged, and allowing to heal on its own is the safest way to prevent infection from happening. The scar that is created from the body naturally healing the body modification will not be nearly as impressive compared to irritating the wound to help create a better scar. The healing time will vary from person to person but it can take up to six months to completely heal a scarification the correct way.

Suspension – It is not just for your cars anymore!

There are many different forms of body modifications or body rituals that could be experienced by a person. One of the most extreme forms of these body rituals is the art of suspension. This type of body art ritual has been around for many years, was used to test or challenge the endurance of the body and mind of a person. Not everyone is cut out to try  the experience of suspension, only an individual knows if they can handle the entire ritual.

What is Suspension?

Suspension is basically where a person is hung from large hooks throughout the body to keep them in the air. Generally there is a team of people helping with this ritual because there is so much work that goes into preparing for this “life changing” event.

Some people think of this ritual as “life changing” because it forces the body to work together in dealing with the physical pain and the mental aspects of this act. However, depending on the person, this event may also affect the person’s spiritual well being.  There is no real preparation that can be done for the physical pain but as far as the mental part of this ritual, there are some things that can be done to mentally prepare for a suspension.  A few of the main things in being mentally prepared for a suspension is to make sure you want to do this, is understanding the positive and negative outcomes that could happen, and being very calm, relaxed and in an all around great state of mind. Deep meditation is also a very good way in getting mentally prepared for the suspension ritual.

How Must You Prepare For Suspension?

When preparing for a suspension ritual it is crucial that professionals are on hand. Temporary piercings are usually done at the time that the suspension is going to be done. These piercings are done with a regular piercing needle then inserted into the holes are large flesh hooks, usually a deep sea fishing hook. Some professionals will use the hooks themselves to do the piercings. Depending on the type of suspension that is going to be attempted and the person’s body weight and size, will decide the placements and number of the hooks.

The most common type of suspension that is done is the suicide suspension; this is where hooks are placed into the back and the person is lifted vertically. O-Kee-Pa suspension is where hooks are placed into the chest and the person is hung vertically. Superman suspension is another popular type of suspensions; it is where the person will be horizontal with their face downward.

Other types or positions of suspensions are:

  • coma (horizontal facing upward)
  • lotus (lotus position)
  • knee (hanging upside down)
  • calf (vertical upside down)
  • crucifix (much like suicide suspension but adding hooks to the arms)
  • resurrection suspension (hanging from torso)

After the hooks are in place they are hooked to a suspension rig with either a chain or a rope. The suspensions rig allows the weight to be evenly dispersed to each hook when the person is being lifted into the air. For some first timers, there are extra chains or ropes that are put on the person, not with hooks, to help them get into the air and become comfortable with the suspension. Depending on the person and the experience of this person can determine the length (minutes to hours) in which one is suspended into the air.

When the suspension ritual is done, the person is carefully lowered back down from the air. The sooner that the hooks are removed the less likely they are to cause extreme pain. After the hooks have been removed the air that has gotten into the skin needs to be expelled. Some people do not want to do this though. The wounds are cleaned. A scab will start to appear where the hooks were in place. Clean the spots where the hooks were like you would any other wound are recommended.  There are many different negative things that could happen during this ritual, such as the hooks being ripped out. If you are going to do this amazing form of body art rituals it is important that you do your homework and find the professionals that can guide you into the direction of a successful suspension.

Find it too scary? Try your body’s compatibility with body jewelry, less adventurous but still a lot of fun!

Play Piercing – Are you Game?

Humans are constantly pushing their bodies to the limits, testing their pain thresholds, tolerances and sexual endeavors. For some people pain and sex go hand in hand. They use pain to enhance sexual desires. In the body modification world play piercing is not always just for the hell of it, but it can also be done to spice up sexual experiences.

Play piercing is basically when needles are pierced into the skin without inserting and leaving a piece of jewelry in the hole. The needles are inserted so that both ends of it stick out of the skin, a secant position. This type of piercing is done just for the enjoyment of procedure rather than for aesthetic purpose. The types of needles that are usually used are sterile hypodermic needles.Like when any other type of piercing, a clean sterile environment is the best way to prevent infections. Play piercing kits are available that include everything needed to do this in the most sterile way. The needles can be arranged so that a design can be seen, such as a star. Some people like to put the needles into the skin so that a corset can be laced around them or small objects can be hung from them. The different sensations of the needles being moved, tugged, or twisted can play into the BDSM scene. Play piercing was started in the BDSM community and is widely accept among people in the BDSM community.
Cock and ball torture is one way that play piercing is used in the bedroom to enhance a sexual experience. Some men will put a ball weight on their scrotum, forcing the skin to be pulled tight and then they will begin to pierce their scrotum with hypodermic needles. Some men allow their significant other to do the play piercing into their scrotum if they trust them enough. For some men play piercing into the scrotum or the shaft of the penis is very ecstatic. Women even enjoy the feelings of play piercing in the vagina or other parts of the body.

This type of body piercing is not permanent. The needles are meant to be removed after the experience is done. After the needles have been removed the wounds need to be cleaned and cared for to prevent infection. Before practicing play piercing again the wounds need to be healed completely or the piercings should be put in different spots.
