Keeping yourself and your PC secure

Keeping yourself and your PC secure

In light of the recent Home Depot security breach we decided to give you some security tips to help protect your PC and your Information.
We strongly recommend following these steps regularly:

Check for viruses and malware. Have the software set to run a scan on your computer automatically, at least daily, but continuously is better. Make sure that you use trusted anti-virus software. If the scan detects any suspicious programs or applications, quarantine them or remove them immediately.

Make sure that you have your Antivirus and Malware software set to Auto-update, so that you get the latest fixes for the most recent threats.

Regularly update your Windows Restore options. Make sure that you have a fairly recent and safe backup to restore from if you need it.

Never use the same passwords for every site, and do not use password memory programs, as if they get hacked then you lose all your passwords to someone else all at once.

Perform regular operating system and browser updates. Whether you use Windows or Mac OS, we recommend enabling your automatic update setting, and still updating when you get a notification. To check for browser updates in Internet Explorer, select the Tools tab and click Windows Update. In Firefox, just click the Help tab and select Check for Updates. Note that Google Chrome automatically updates to a newer version when one is released.

Protect your password. Never enter your password after following a link in an email from an untrusted site. Always go directly to the site after You Enter it. Also, never send your passwords or any other personal information via email.

Change your passwords often.

Only shop on sites that you trust and that is Secured. The site that you are shopping on may be like http://www.The ChainGang.com while you are shopping and that is fine, but as soon as you begine your checkout process the site should read “HTTPS” instead of “HTTP”. That at least says that they have a secure socet which encrypts your info to help prevent it from being stolen.

Never do secure shopping from  a cafe or hotel as it is to easy to get your transmitted information before it ever even gets to the website you are on.

You should also be sure to:

  •     Never tell anyone your password; if you do tell someone, change it as soon as possible.
  •     Use a strong password, and don't write it down or send it via email.

  •     Change your password immediately after noticing any changes in your account that you didn't initiate.
  •     Always sign out of your account when you're using public computers.
  •     Clear the browsers history, (forms, passwords, cache, and cookies ) on a regular basis, especially on a public computer.

There are tons more tips but these are a few that may help.
